The 'I' in Christie's Storm
In Frank Bruni’s column, “The ‘I’ in Christie’s
Storm”, he describes the importance of ‘we’ in politics. He also goes into
detail about the difference between the usage of ‘I’ and ‘you’ in politics.
Bruni goes into detail saying “From ‘I’ comes the yearning to be celebrated…”
and how that can affect your chances in being elected. Later on in his article,
Bruni continues to say ”In his news conference on Thursday he {Chris Christie}
found a way to spell apology with a thousand I’s”. The entire article, Bruni
seems perturbed by Christie’s speech. He uses Bill Clinton as an example “Did
he, as a candidate and a president, really fell our pain, or did he just fell
the need to have us believe it? It doesn’t matter. When that lower lip jutted
out and those eyes misted, you wanted to give him a blanket, a binky, and your
support.” Perhaps this is what Christie is doing. Maybe he doesn’t necessarily
feel our pain, and just wants us to believe that he does.
Speaker- Frank Bruni, the writer, values the liability of the candidates who're even considering a role in office.
Occasion- Chris Christie was involved in a traffic scandal on the Washington Bridge and afterward, he gave a speech about how he was misled by one of his staff members. His entire speech was all about him and how it's everyone else’s fault besides his and Frank Bruni pointed that out to the public. Bruni also pointed out what the different pronouns mean (Such as I, you, and we).
Audience- The audience would be New Jersey residents or anyone who is considering voting for Christie because he is trying to be reelected as the governor.
Purpose- I feel Bruni doesn’t think that Christie is a suitable candidate for governor. I think Bruni is trying to persuade the audience’s opinion by telling them about how Christie is so self-absorbed.
Subject- The subject of this article is determining whether or not Chris Christie is a suitable candidate for governor.
Tone-A word that would describe this article would be pessimistic because Bruni is completely against Christie in all ways. He does not want Christ as governor.
